Ian Fisher

Education: Ian received his B.A. with College Honors in Political Science and a minor in Psychology from Washington University in St. Louis in 2011. In 2014, he earned his J.D. as a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar from Columbia Law School. During law school, Ian served on the Columbia Journal of Environmental Law and the Columbia Environmental Law Clinic. Ian also organized and participated in spring break pro bono trips to draft wills and powers of attorney for tribal members throughout Wisconsin.

Prior Experience: Before joining Kanji & Katzen, Ian worked for a law firm representing Indian tribes, non-profit organizations, and local governments on environmental matters. Ian assisted clients with litigation in federal district and appellate courts involving, among other statutes, the Clean Water Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, and Federal Land Policy and Management Act. Ian also helped tribes develop environmental laws, including tribal permitting programs, air emission standards, and waste management regulations.

Following law school, Ian served as a legal fellow with the Native American Rights Fund, a Staff Law Clerk with the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, and a Frederick A.O. Schwarz Litigation Fellow at the Natural Resources Defense Council. At the Natural Resources Defense Council, Ian litigated a Clean Air Act citizen suit in district court and navigated discovery on behalf of his client, resulting in an $8.6 million settlement benefiting the local community.

Areas of Concentration: Ian assists tribes with drafting and revising tribal environmental laws and obtaining the necessary approvals of those laws. Ian also focuses on litigation on behalf of tribal governments in matters involving the environment, natural resources, and tribal sovereignty.

Interests: Outside of work, Ian enjoys biking and spending time with his wife and their 20-pound cat.
